The State of Bahia

Bahia is one of the largest states in Brazil, being the equivalent size of France. Historically, being considered the poor neighbour in the North, Brazilians are starting to discover for themselves what it has to offer. Salvador is the capital city and the fourth largest in Brazil.

On a personal level, I fell in love with Salvador during my travelling days. I had travelled through Africa and found it a magical continent of easy going, honest people. I then spent time travelling in Central and South America which I loved for the history and lively party feel. Salvador, to me, combines these two perfectly; it has the Latin, sexy, feel of beautiful, physical people who love to dance and party and the simple, unsophisticated mood of Africa that sets the slow pace amidst a vibrancy of colour and music. Being the oldest colonial city in South America it now has the proud status of being a UNESCO historical site.

If you get the opportunity you may well be interested in visiting an orphanage recently set up by an English couple. Originated by a Brazilian woman woman in her 80s (Maria) living in a very poor part of town, who has been taking in children from the street for over 40 years. A charity was set up to help her and has taken off to such an extent that they have built their own orphanage.
